We start from the other end. What do you haul, where do you run it, how many days a week, and what does the terrain look like? A 2.28 rear ratio is right for flat lanes and wrong for hills. An automated manual holds its value differently to a stick depending on who you eventually sell it to. Those decisions are worth getting right before the money moves.

We also lease, and we buy. If the arithmetic says leasing beats buying for your cash position, we will say so — even when a sale would suit us better. And we keep hold of the unglamorous work afterwards: GPS on the equipment, scheduled maintenance tracked, fuel on one account.
